Aim

The Dutch Police bike-to-work scheme aim is to promote active commuting among its workforce, with an emphasis on enhancing the health and well-being of its employees while also contributing to environmental sustainability. By targeting the 37% of officers living within a 12-kilometre distance from their workplace, the initiative focuses on reducing the reliance on cars, cutting pollution, and addressing parking shortages, all while promoting physical activity. They have done that based on a system of benefits and services, such as tax benefits, infrastructure support, free bike maintenance.

Outcome

Between 2017 and 2022, participation in the scheme grew from 2,461 to 6,887 officers, with 29% of officers now commuting by bike, showcasing the program's success. The sucess has been significant with a notable increase in physical activity among officers, leading to improved mental and physical well-being.
