The Pan-European Master Plan on Walking is the first strategic document dedicated to promoting walking across the continent. It aims to place walking at the forefront of mobility and health policies. Developed within the framework of The Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) and the European Environment and Health Process (EHP), this plan recognizes walking not only as a fundamental mode of transport but also as an essential physical activity for health, a local economic catalyst, and a factor for social inclusion. It provides comprehensive guidelines for policymakers.
Outcome
Outcome
The plan provides a strategic framework for countries to adopt national walking policies, prioritize pedestrian-friendly urban planning, and ensure equitable access to safe and pleasant walking environments. It serves as a call to action for policymakers to recognize walking as a public health priority and a cost-effective investment.
